City of Dystopia

The City of Ember - Jeanne DuPrau

This book starts out with the builders leaving a box with all the mayors so when the time is right the correct mayor will get the important information to save the city, but that changed when one took the box and died before putting it back. Lina, the main character and Doon are now old enough to get a job but with the frequent light shortage they know something is up. Lina soon finds a letter stating information on a place where they will be free and live a different type of life from the box the builders left. Finally Lina, Doon, and Lina's little sister set off into their adventure to the beautiful new world.

I think this book has a lot of different ways to connect. I can connect to this book because like Lina I love to see different places and I would've traded my job for messenger if I got pipe works. This books relates to The Giver because it is a world that they do not control and wish that somethings were different. It doesn't relate to the world because nothing is the same except for the stores and apartments and library.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about society. I would also recommend it to someone who is more mature.

Amazing

So B. It - Sarah Weeks

In the beginning of the book Heidi, Bernadette and Mama were introduced. Heidi is the daughter of Mama who is mentally a little slower than some others and says her name is So B. It, Bernadette is their neighbor who helped Mama raise Heidi since she couldn't. Heidi was always interested in knowing things so she started making lists on what she knew and didn't know about different people. Mama says "soof" at random times and she wanted to know what it meant but her mom was not able to tell her even if she wanted to because she couldn't speak especially in full sentences. Anyways Heidi wanted to find out what "soof" meant so she went out of her way to go to the mental hospital/ home to find out Mama's history. Once she got there after her long journey ( which she had to go on by herself because Bernadette was afraid of the outside) she found out "soof" was her fathers name for her mother  ( he had the same disability as her) , her grandmother got ran over by a bus and her grandfather didn't want another disabled child to be brought into this world so he payed Heidi's grandmother to stay away from him and his son if she wanted her daughter to have a baby.

This text is the most relatable so far. This text relates to me because like Heidi I like to know different things especially about my family history. This text relates to "Out of my mind" in my opinion because they are both facing life as or with disabilities which was insightful. This text relates to the world because it shows that not everyone has a great past but what is in their future is key.

I would recommend this book to anyone once again. More specifically I would recommend this book to people who like to think and solve mysteries. I say this because this book seemed mostly like mystery to me, the way Heidi went to look for clues about her past and actually found them!

The Christmas Spirit is Here

A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens

In this book the main character Ebenezer Scrooge was a grumpy old man who disliked everyone and everything but he what he hated was christmas!  In the beginning of the book Scrooge had the worst christmas spirit and didnt mind killing others right along with his. Soon enough his friend Bob Marley's ghost self came to life and told Scrooge that if he kept being grumpy and rude he would have chains attached to him from "locks" that he didnt unlock when he was alive. From here he met 3 ghosts who showed him who he was in the past ( a nice young man with a huge heart until he started loving money more than love itself)  , who he is now , and who he will be in the future (dead and people selling his stuff for money without a care) . In the end Scrooge realized what type of person he was and wanted to change, so he picked up his spirits and gave his clerk Bob Cratchit a raise and praise for his excellent work and helped his great nephew Tiny Tim get the help he needed to survive.

This text was very easy to connect to. I could connect because I know a lot of people ( including me) who keep their spirits high during Christmas and do not let anyone bring them down just like Scrooge's nephew stayed enthusiastic even when his unclue declined his Christmas invitation in such a harsh way. This text does not relate to another text for me because it is one of a kind in such a good way . I loved the way it had the spirits show him the past, present and future because it was so much like the movie! This text relates to the world because there are some people who never get into the holiday spirit or always have a grumpy attitude.

I would reccomend this book to mostly anyone. I would especially reccomend it to people celebrate a holiday that you need to have a good spirit for. I say this because even though this is a Christmas book it still has the fell of other holidays like thanksgiving and hanukkah.

Best Graphic Novel

Cardboard - Doug TenNapel

This book started off with it being Cam's birthday. His father Mike is the only one providing for the family since Cam's mom died, so the only thing he can afford for a present is a cardboard box. This box seemed to Mike as the worst gift a father could give his child but little did he know it would change their life. That night they made and paint a boxer out of the cardboard, then in the middle of the night it came to life! The boxer who they named Bill was a wonderful friend and supporter with him Cam was being bullied by the evil Marcus who stole his cardboard maker to make evil creatures(but is rich). Long story short Marcus, Cam, Lyle and Bill got stuck in a cardboard world made by the evil cardboard Marcus. Fortunately, it was raining outside and the rain destroyed all the villains (but also sadly including Bill). The ending was the best part, Lyle and the neighbor Tina were on their journey of love and Bill came back to life but in human form.

This was definitely a book a lot of people could relate to. I could relate to this book only because if my cardboard friend was squirted with water and was disintegrating I would make a maker to get unlimited cardboard. This text relates to the text because all of Doug TenNapel's graphic novels are nice to read and understand. This text relates to the world because there are some people who are rich but still take because they realize the non-materialistic like love and friendship are nicer to have.

I would recommend this book to anyone who knows how to read and see because this is a great book and not too long plus the pictures are great and descriptive. I think anyone with a good imagination would like this book.
